McGuireWoods Partner Richard Mason Named Co-Chair of International Bar Association’s Insolvency Section

Monday, October 10, 2016

McGuireWoods partner Richard J. Mason has been appointed co-chair of the International Bar Association’s Insolvency Section, the most prominent international association of lawyers who focus on cross-border restructuring, insolvency and creditors’ rights law. His two-year term begins Jan. 1, 2017.

With approximately 900 members worldwide, the IBA Insolvency Section has had significant influence on the practice of cross-border insolvency law. It provides a forum for educational programs and contributes to legal reforms through delegations to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), the World Bank and the European Securities and Markets Authority.

Mason, a Chicago-based partner with the firm’s Restructuring and Insolvency Department, represents clients throughout the United States and abroad in transactions and litigation, with a strong concentration in business insolvency and debtor-creditor relations. He has been a member of the IBA’s Insolvency Section since 1990. He is a fellow and chair of the educational programs committee of the American College of Bankruptcy, and a fellow of the International Insolvency Institute — both invitation-only organizations.

“With the number of cross-border insolvencies and related litigation on the rise, the IBA’s Insolvency Section has worked with the world’s most influential bankruptcy policymakers on the development and enactment of critical legal reforms,” Mason said. “It is an honor for me, and for the firm, to be appointed to co-chair of this prestigious group.”

Established in 1947, the International Bar Association is the world's leading organization of international practitioners, bar associations and law societies. Its membership includes more than 80,000 individual lawyers and more than 190 bar associations and law societies encompassing more than 160 countries.
