The mission of the Bankruptcy History Committee is to help preserve the history of bankruptcy and insolvency practice in and with the United States. Several of our Fellows have created oral histories which are archived at the Biddle Library at the University of Pennsylvania, including Prof. Melissa B. Jacoby, of the University of North Carolina School of Law. Prof. Jacoby recently completed the Oral History of Senator Elizabeth Warren (MA).
In this oral history, Prof. Jacoby interviews Senator Elizabeth Warren and starts with discussing Senator Warren’s experience entering the realm of bankruptcy law. Senator Warren details her early career as a professor at University of Houston, University of Texas, and University of Pennsylvania and how her research and teaching further propelled her career in bankruptcy and public interest. She also talks about her work with the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, the National Bankruptcy Conference, and other bankruptcy practitioners during the 1980s and 1990s in the era of the ‘new’ Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978. Senator Warren concludes this interview by detailing her work with consumer bankruptcy in 1990s, serving as a reporter for the National Bankruptcy Review Commission, her early years teaching at Harvard Law, and her involvement starting the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
